Like a great many geeks with a lot of computer processing power that isn't being used most of the time (hey, I can't manage more than two keyboards simultaneously), I'm participating in the SETI@home project.
This is the search for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence using the distributed power of thousands of computers around the world to analyse radio telscope data. Anybody can do their bit to help just by downloading the screensaver from http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/. In fact, as a screensaver it's more useful than many application programs I've seen. All you need to do is download the program and periodically connect to the Internet to fetch packets of raw radio data and return the results of the analysis when it's complete. If you're reading this web page, then you obviously connect to the Internet anyway (unless you're just using a cybercafe or similar). The screensaver is just that, it doesn't cause any disruption when you're working normally on your computer. So why not give it a try.
My own progress on the project can be found on the SETI statistics page.
